The Perfect Design Inspiration for an Open Concept Home
The Perfect Design Inspiration for an Open Concept Home
January 22, 2026
Open concept floor plans have been popular for years, and the trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Many older homes were built with a traditional floor plan in mind—meaning that each room served its own separate purpose. The kitchen was for cooking, the dining room was for sharing meals with your family or friends in a formal setting and the living room was for entertaining guests. Nowadays, we’ve taken down the walls in order to create a more spacious looking interior where everyone can be together—but with all of the open space, you might not be sure how to fill it. Read on to see some design tips our team at May Homes has put together to help you make the most out of your open concept home.
Create visual separation
Having an open floor plan doesn’t mean that you lose the ability to create defined spaces throughout your home. How you arrange your furniture throughout the room and the decorations that you choose can help create visual separation. Envisioning how your family and visitors will actually move throughout this space can also guide you through creating the ideal layout of furniture. Area rugs offer an incredible way to help you separate each space in your open floor plan by creating specific locations throughout the room where you can then move your furniture around. Area rugs will also layer beautifully over whatever flooring finish you select while adding elements of texture, color and pattern to the room.
Additionally, the way you position your furniture can help produce a natural barrier in open space, creating the illusion of separate rooms without having actual walls. Instead of positioning your couch against the wall, consider placing it in the middle of the room and facing it toward your fireplace or TV, to create a defined living space.
Use cohesive colors and materials
For open floor plans, the color palette you choose will help establish a cohesive look throughout the space. While it’s important to create a visual separation throughout your open floor plan, your kitchen, dining room and living area will need to keep a consistent overall look since they are all still one singular space.
With no physical separation between the main living areas in an open-concept plan, leaning toward a neutral color palette will allow you to carry the design throughout the entire space without it feeling overwhelming—and allow you to add in pops of color where you would like with your furniture choices, decorations or artwork.
